What is AI Overviews?

AI Overviews (formerly the Search Generative Experience, or SGE) is Google's generative answer layer, shown above the traditional ten blue links for a large share of queries. It reads a set of top-ranking pages, synthesizes them into a short narrative answer, and links out to a handful of the sources it drew from — usually a subset of what would already rank highly in classic organic search.

This makes AI Overviews the single highest-stakes GEO surface for most businesses, because it sits directly on top of existing Google traffic and can absorb clicks that used to go to the ranked pages below it. Being cited inside the Overview is valuable; being excluded from it while your organic ranking stays the same is a real traffic risk, since users increasingly stop scrolling once they've read the summary.

Because AI Overviews draws heavily from pages that already rank well organically, the single biggest lever for appearing in it is still classic SEO — topical authority, technical crawlability, and Google's `Google-Extended` crawler access — layered with GEO-specific structuring: concise direct-answer paragraphs, FAQ/HowTo schema, and unambiguous factual statements the model can lift with confidence.
