What is Generative Engine Optimization?
GEO is the practice of shaping content, structured data and off-site presence so generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews surface, cite and recommend your brand in their answers.
Generative Engine Optimization is the discipline of making a brand visible inside AI-generated answers rather than only inside a list of blue links. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best project management tool for a 5-person startup" or Perplexity "who are the top GEO monitoring vendors," an LLM synthesizes a short, often single answer from whatever it can retrieve and trust. GEO is the work of making sure your brand is one of the things it retrieves, trusts, and names.
It emerged because generative answer engines changed the unit of competition. Classic SEO optimizes for a ranked list of ten results a human scans; GEO optimizes for a handful of sentences an AI writes, frequently with zero clicks back to the source. Being ranked #11 for a query might still earn no traffic, but being cited #1 in an AI's synthesized answer can drive a purchase decision with the user never visiting your site at all.
The core levers are the same raw materials search engines have always used — crawlable pages, structured data, third-party mentions and links — pointed at a new target: citation-worthiness. That means clear, factual, unambiguous content near the top of the page; schema markup that makes claims machine-parseable; a clean llms.txt file; consistent, mentionable presence across the review sites, forums and comparison pages that LLMs are trained on or retrieve from live; and welcoming the AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and friends) that decide whether you're even in the running.
GEO does not replace SEO — it sits alongside it, often reusing 80% of the same technical and content foundations. The other 20% is new: tracking a fixed set of prompts across multiple engines over time (prompt tracking), measuring share of voice inside AI answers instead of rank position, and treating a citation from ChatGPT the way you'd treat a backlink.
